AI search engines — ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — increasingly intercept the queries that used to flow to Google. They do not just rank pages; they synthesise answers and cite a handful of sources. If your brand is not in that citation list, you are invisible at the moment of intent.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are the practices of structuring content so that it is the source a model picks. The mechanics overlap with SEO but the optimisations are different: clarity over keyword density, structured data over backlinks, direct answers over long preambles.

The five mechanics that earn citations

First, write the answer in the first paragraph. Models grab the lede, not the conclusion. A clear, one-sentence answer followed by supporting detail is the format that gets quoted.
